Khankendi, also known as Stepankert is the capital of the defacto Republic of Artsakh. Whilst operating as effectively an independent state, Artsakh has little international recognition and is deemed as part of Azerbaijan by most countries, whilst the people identify ethnically closer to Armenia. Khankendi has a number of museums in the region, most prominently the Artsakh State Museum of Local History and the Museum to the Memory of Perished Azatamartiks. Another landmark worth visiting is the We Are Our Mountains Monument. This monument of an elderly Karabakh man and woman has become the symbol of Artsakh. Khankendi is a unique destination because it's lively, safe and great for the culturally inclined
